When’s the last time a Virginia Tech running back had a 100-yard game?
If you guessed that it was over one month ago against Marshall, then you’re correct.
After the Hokies’ running game put forth a lackluster performance that only amassed 76 yards against Pitt, the team looked to right the ship during the bye week in preparation for Duke.
Statistically, the outcome was good.
Quarterback Logan Thomas ran the ball 24 times for a total of 101 yards and averaged 4.2 yards per carry. Meanwhile, running backs Trey Edmunds and J.C. Coleman accounted for a combined 72 yards on 22 carries.
The statistics were a little better this time around, but the running backs weren’t so pleased with their performance.
“I wouldn’t say we had a significantly better game,” said running back J.C. Coleman. “We still didn’t have many yards and our yards-per-carry weren’t what we really wanted it to be as well. I know Logan had a real good game rushing the ball. That’s pretty much where the bulk of our rushing yards came from. Me and Trey (Edmunds), by any means didn’t light up the rushing game at all.”
Tech ran for nearly 200 yards and won the time of possession battle against Duke, but couldn’t convert anything into points.
It came down to making plays and gaining the yards necessary when it mattered most. On the opening drive of the second half, the Hokies went for a first down on a fourth and one. They ran the ball off tackle with Trey Edmunds, who was stuffed at the line of scrimmage.
“It’s just a couple little things in terms of technique whether it be by one of the lineman, a tight end, a fullback, the back not seeing it exactly right or a receiver on a perimeter block,” said offensive line coach Jeff Grimes. “Just a little bit off of being in position where we could’ve had a whole lot more yards I think.”
The frustration is evident among the Hokies as the running game has been sporadic all season long and has failed to show up on a consistent basis.
Coming off of the Duke game, the main focus is on getting things in order in time for an away game at Boston College that presents a tough challenge.
