The Virginia Tech women?s tennis team has begun the 2003 leg of their season on a torrid start, losing only two matches all year while jumping out to a 4-0 record.
?I think the girls are playing with confidence right now? said women?s tennis head coach Lisa hart. ?I think the difference is that they are really committed this season to the team?
The team capped off a successful day of tennis last Saturday by defeating both Hampton and East Tennessee State 5-2 and 7-0 respectively. Tech began the day against Hampton with wins in the doubles department from the duos of Ginger Loudermilk and Kristen Stubbs, as well as Zdenka Videnova and Elissa Kinard.
The Hokies then went on to take four of the six singles matches led by number one seed Kristen Stubbs. Stubbs demonstrated her resilience by fighting back after dropping the first set, as she took the next two sets 6-4, 7-5 for the victory. Kinard, Meredith Vincent, and Videnova also notched singles victories for Tech.
Later that afternoon the Hokies welcomed East Tennessee State to the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies breezed past the Buccaneers en route to a 7-0 victory.
Tech began by dominating doubles play led again by the number one combination of Loudermilk and Stubbs. In singles play, Carolyn Kramer and Loudermilk, the Hokies number 2 and 3 seeds respectively, both bounced back from losses earlier in the day to win their matches.
Stubbs, Vincent, Videnova, and Felice Lam also recorded singles wins for the Hokies.
The senior duo of Stubbs and Videnova have been the leaders of the women?s team this season, and their leadership will continue to be relied upon as the 2003 season progresses.
The Hokies return to action this weekend starting with a Friday doubleheader beginning with Charlotte at noon and Pittsburgh later that evening at 7. Tech will then play another doubleheader on Saturday with matches starting at noon against Arkansas-Little Rock and at 7 P.M. against West Virginia.
