Granted, students in universities across the country have grown to love their local stations that first welcomed them to small-town America, ranging from country to easy listening to rock. But this new on-the air-flare that is Hot 100.7 is a welcoming change, thanks to its obvious target: students.
The new Hot 100.7 officially signed on the air in October 2004, said ?CJ,? program director and disk jockey. However, the DJs didn?t start on the air until January 2005. Since then, the station has more than doubled the number of listeners in its first three months on the air. Its growth of 200 percent among female listeners, ages 18-34 is the largest of any demographic group.Hot 100.7 has created a presence in the New River Valley through hosting contests, free giveaways and appearing at hotspots in town on a weekly basis.
On Wednesday nights, DJ Gizmo broadcasts live from Macado?s on East Main Street in Radford as part of the ?Humpday After Work Party.? Hot 100.7 hosts the party from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and offers free giveaways and dinners.
On Thursday nights, Hot 100.7 gets the party started at the Hot 100 College Night, held in Attitudes Bar and Caf? in the Holiday Inn. CJ broadcasts live from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.?Without a doubt, Hot 100 College Night at Attitudes Bar and Caf? is the weekly event that we do that draws in the most people,? CJ said. ?There is always a great crowd and a line to get in. I think it?s popular because it?s been the place to go on Thursday nights for years. Hot 100.7 just kicked it up a notch by broadcasting live from the club and having fun contests there and giving away some pretty good prizes every week.?
On Friday night, Hot 100.7 deejays Burruss Square Tavern from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., and is on the air live from 10 p.m. to midnight.?Hot 100.7 has brought a lot of people to the Friday night scene, and a different kind of upbeat crowd,? said Lisa Steiner, Burruss Square Tavern employee. ?We are much busier on Friday nights now.?
In addition to local events, Hot 100.7 regularly gives away tickets to nearby concerts. Soon, the station will be giving away tickets to see Gwen Stefani and the Black Eyed Peas in concert. In order to welcome back students, Hot 100.7 is also giving away Hot 100 backpacks filled with compact discs, concert tickets to ?Scream IV,? gift certificates and free stuff from merchants in the New River Valley.
In addition to showing up for huge college events, Hot 100.7 is also getting involved in student life by helping with sorority and fraternity fundraising efforts for the university and the community.?I just want students to know that Hot 100 is their radio station,? CJ said. ?We?re here for you all year round. We want to give you what you want ? great music, contests and prizes. We want to be the New River Valley?s number one radio station and hopefully when the students graduate and leave town they?ll miss Hot 100 as much as they?ll miss college.?
