Many may have read the ?Sports Illustrated On Campus Edition? spread glorifying the University of Virginia this week. They were ranked ?best stadium party,? with the magazine saying ?On Sunny Saturdays in Charlottesville, football socialites in neckties and sundresses congregate on The Hill, to schmooze and swill beverages from incognito flasks.? (think hollowed-out binoculars in plastic bags tied to pudgy waists).?
Sports Illustrated may celebrate the Wahoo fans? stuck-up attitude and alcoholic belligerence ? the alcohol being the only thing that brings anyone to the games in the first place. Here at Virginia Tech, we have a lot more respect for our team than that.
We don?t need Sports Illustrated to condone our in-stadium drinking to know that we have an amazing fan base. We know that by looking into the stands at an away game against Duke and seeing more orange and maroon than blue and white. We know that by walking through Blacksburg on game day and seeing nothing but maroon and orange.
There is a reason that ESPN chose us for Saturday?s College Gameday show. They know that Blacksburg simply has the best atmosphere in the ACC. Our fans not only show up for the game, but show up with pride.
The spirit of a Hokie can be best described by a night several years ago that also featured a game against Georgia Tech. It was a rainy night in Blacksburg, and during a thunderstorm, all the Hokie faithful filed into the covered areas of the stadium for shelter. Tech?s fans were so amazing that night as they all huddled together waiting for that moment when they said everyone could come back in for the game. Lee Corso had said he expected the Yellowjackets to come out on top, and while Hokie fans were crowded together in anticipation, his car was struck by lightning. The game ended up getting postponed because of the storm, but after that game, Corso went public saying, ?I don?t know what a Hokie is, but I know God is one of them.?
This weekend?s GT game might not see the fireworks in the sky that game saw. This time, the fireworks will be on the field.
