Police responded to a fight at a Foxridge apartment complex early morning Sunday, Oct. 30, which resulted in a malicious wounding. Officials from the Blacksburg Police Department arrived on the scene at 1:38 a.m. where several witnesses said the victim, Michael McDonald, 19, a Radford University student, was arguing with the suspect, 21-year-old Blacksburg resident Ryan James Hysong, when he was struck in the leg.

Lt. Bruce Bradbery of the Blacksburg Police Department said that according to witnesses, after striking McDonald, Hysong ran inside the apartment and returned to the parking lot, carrying a 12-gauge shotgun, where the fight was taking place. Witnesses quickly confiscated and secured the weapon, which the Blacksburg Police Department now possesses.

Bradbery said McDonald believed he was only punched by Hysong, but then noticed that he was bleeding. McDonald confronted the suspect again, Bradbery said, which is when the suspect allegedly retrieved and pointed the shotgun at McDonald.

The suspect was transported to Montgomery Regional Hospital for a small cut over his right eye. The victim was found at Montgomery Regional Hospital with a one-inch long and 1.5 inches deep laceration to his thigh.

Recovered from the scene of the crime along with the Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun were four 000 buck shotgun shells and a three-inch stainless steel pocketknife with serrated edges, Bradbery said. Although the report is inconclusive, the knife appears to be the instrument of injury used on McDonald, he said.

No arrests have been made in the incident.
