A medical examiner has determined that Brian Joseph McCloskey, the Virginia Tech student who died a week ago after being found severely injured near a bike trail, died of multiple blunt force injuries.

Gregory Wanger, an assistant chief medical examiner for Virginia, confirmed the cause of death yesterday afternoon but would not comment further about the autopsy results because of the ongoing police investigation.

Police officials were not available yesterday afternoon to comment on any possible change these results might have on the case.

A freshman university studies major from Olney, Md., McCloskey was found with severe head, neck and back injuries in the early morning hours of Nov. 5 in the 1400 block of Christine Court in Pheasant Run Crossing Townhomes, Lt. Bruce Bradbery of the Blacksburg police told the Collegiate Times last week.

After being flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, McCloskey remained in critical condition until his death on Nov. 10.

The incident has not only caught the attention of national news agencies but also the top officials in the university administration. On Friday, university President Charles Steger released a statement offering ?our sincere condolences and profound sorrow to Brian?s family and friends.? Zenobia Hikes, vice president for student affairs, encouraged students in another university-wide statement to act responsibly on and off campus.

Anyone with information about the case may contact the Blacksburg police at (540) 961-1150.
