As the current SGA director of Relay for Life and the captain of the Southwest Virginia Mountain Rescue Group, Chesson constantly serves the Tech campus as well as the outside community. ?He is the definition of ut prosim. Everyday he helps Virginia Tech students and the community around him,? said ?Golden Ticket? presidential candidate Chris Miller. ?I think someone with his background alone is a great person to represent the student body.?
Chesson joined SGA three years ago, starting as a member of the community outreach for The Big Event. Enjoying the philanthropic aspect of SGA's programs, the following year he took over as the logistics coordinator for Relay for Life, while continuing his work with the rescue group.
?I'd like to think I'm 50 percent divided in service to the campus and service to the community,? Chesson said.
This year, as the director of Relay for Life, Chesson worked to increase Tech's participation in the cause, heightening the program's goals.
?He's really taken Relay for Life to a new level,? said Chris Sweeney, director of The Big Event and senior finance major. ?He remodeled the Relay for Life Committee and set higher goals. Chris wants to be in the top 10 or 15 nationally, and I'm pretty sure he'll accomplish that goal.?
Others in SGA acknowledge Chesson's dedication and appreciate his work ethic. ?He always goes above and beyond the call of duty. He always wants to help other programs. If anyone ever needs any help, he's there ? He's just a great guy,? said Chelsea Butterfield, SGA director of fund raising and senior management major.
Along with Miller and Chesson, Jennifer Crook and Brittany Shanks comprise the remaining ?Golden Ticket? candidates as treasurer and secretary respectively.
Crook currently serves as the co-director of Hokie Effect, a position that helped prepare her for the responsibilities of executive treasurer.
?She's had lots of money go through her hands in terms of the Orange and Maroon Effect sales. She really understands the financial side of SGA,? Chesson said.
Unable to find a secretarial candidate within the executive branch of SGA, Miller and Chesson recruited Shanks based upon her previous experiences with SGA government affairs and high school student council.
?She had a really good high school experience with student council and she is very organized and possesses all the qualities necessary to get the job done,? Chesson said.
With strong candidates on both tickets, Chesson explained that ?ask SGA? and ?Golden Ticket? each desire important goals for the university.
?Both tickets bring good and different things to the table. I believe we have a little bit more of a programming background ? And one thing that sets us apart is our far-reaching goal of unity,? Chesson said.
