Virginia Tech?s third annual artsfusion festival will be celebrated throughout Blacksburg this week, running from April 19-25. Featuring a wide range of exhibitions, the event will celebrate the local artistic community by offering the public a chance to view the work of students and local artists.
Artsfusion was founded in the spring of 2004.
?It was noticed that numerous art events were held throughout the local community and Blacksburg ? (it was) decided that all the events should be organized under one roof, therefore, the celebration of the arts was created,? said Jacquelyn Gallagher, communication manager for artsfusion 2006.
With over 30 events in its first year, artsfusion has expanded to over 75 events this year. Events encompass many genres including: art, Cyberarts, dance, film, music, photography, theatre and writing.
Sponsored by the School of the Arts and the departments of theatre arts, music, art & art history and English, artsfusion boasts participants from Virginia Tech, the Blacksburg community, local galleries, music groups and restaurants.
Exhibitions can be viewed at this year?s venues, She-Sha Caf? and Hookah Lounge, Easy Chair Bookstore, Squires Atrium, Blacksburg Public Library, the Graduate Life Center and a wide variety of additional locations around Blacksburg.
?Anyone who is interested can be a part of artsfusion. There are so many possibilities, (the exhibits) cater to all interests,? Gallagher said.
With art exhibits in 21st century abstract, floral, photography, Cyberarts and by individual artists, the variety allows ?a wider selection of art to cater to different tastes,? Gallagher said.
Most of the exhibits are free and artwork is available to view in each venue. There are art classes available for $10/class for advanced and $8/class for junior classes at the Art Pannonia.
There is a photography exhibit in the Squires Atrium, a graduate student art exhibit featuring works by the winners of the Graduate Art Contest at the Graduate Life Center, installations at the Armory Art Gallery, and 21st century abstract art at Art Pannonia which will be displayed all week.
?A very convenient and relevant exhibit is the student photography exhibit in Squires, also the Residential Leadership Committee is sponsoring a student and alumni art exhibit in the south end zone of Lane Stadium. I think it?s a really interesting venue to have an art exhibit,? said Elyse Gonyo, producer of artsfusion 2006.
On April 21-25, at the XYZ Art Gallery, a presentation of art created by art students in the department of art will be revealed in an exhibit called Spring Cleaning.
Another exhibit students may want to check out is the Cyberarts Showcase, which begins April 20. Cyberarts is the result of a yearlong course in which teams of students interpreted a project theme, Elemental. The four-team interpretations include ancient Chinese color therapy, stop-motion photography, Calvin?s Box and the idea of a flat earth.
Artsfusion offers students and community members the opportunity to view new, innovative artwork, as well as traditional pieces. For more information about events occurring during this year?s artsfusion festival, visit www.artsfusion.net.
