Virginia Tech will test its new warning siren system today at 12:10 p.m. The new siren system serves a variety of purposes, said Zachary Adams, co-director of Environmental Health and Safety at Tech, such as alerting students to inclement weather, chemical spills and terrorist activity.

?We needed some way to get the warning out to people who are outside of buildings,? Adams said. ?If you hear the sirens, get inside and get additional information.?

The four-siren system is a combination voice and tone, Adams said. Tones will be accompanied by a verbal message indicating whether or not it is a test.

The sirens will sound Westminster Chimes when the emergency has ended.

Tests will take place twice a year, once during fall semester in order to educate new students and once spring semester during tornado awareness week, Adams said.
