On Tuesday, representatives of the Corps - Andrew Kirshak and Tim Zagrobelny, - presented a check of $23,000 to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation.
This year's check was the sixth annual check that the Corps has donated, accumulating approximately $105,000 in donations to the foundation.
Joe Banner, National D-Day Memorial Foundation's associate for special projects, commended the Corps for their abundant contributions in the past six years that have helped the foundation alleviate their $ 5.9 million debt from a memorial construction in September 2001.
?They have contributed more money than any membership organization, including service organizations, veteran organizations and community organizations,? Banner said.
In June 2001, the foundation commemorated a memorial that put them in a construction debt of $ 5.9 million. Since then, they have decreased their debt to $564 thousand. Banner said that much of the donations from other organizations were inspired by the Corps' efforts.
The foundation has shared the Corps' compelling story with other organizations that has inspired others to donate, says Banner.
Tim Zagrobelny, junior political science major and coordinator of the fundraising campaign, said that approximately 80 to 100 members of the Corps participated in the efforts of collecting donations during football tailgates.
For the last six years, the Corps has primarily raised their contributions to the foundation by seeking donations from tailgaters at Virginia Tech home football games.
?It's important for the public and veterans to see the efforts of the future leaders recognizing the leaders before them,? Banner said.
Donations were also collected from individuals who attended the Corps parade during Parent's Weekend and Homecoming Weekend. All money raised in the Corps' ?Shadow Day? auction was given to the fund as well.
?The Corps has been instrumental in a grassroots effort and has helped us approach others about their selfless service,? said Banner.
?I'm proud of everyone that helped and supported the foundation. It shows Tech cares about the community,? said Zagrobelny.
The Corps donated $6,000 in 2001, $10,000 in 2002, $29,000 in 2003, $37,000 in 2004 and $27,000 in 2005.
