As you?re walking to class, donning your most fashionable outfit, the Drillfield becomes a runway. Between those wide, grassy fields are perfect pathways for showing off your well put-together look. Then, suddenly, the sky opens up and a torrential downpour leaves you drenched from head to toe. As you walk into class, all eyes are on your (now see-through) white T-shirt and clingy jeans. Shoes squeaking towards a seat, you wonder, ?Why didn?t I bring an umbrella??
Everyone?s been there. After checking the weather forecast and seeing a chance of rain, you decide to take a chance for the sake of fashion. Wouldn?t it be great to go out on a rainy day and not worry about ruining a pair of shoes or turning in homework with water stains along the edges? Stop stressing. Here are a few must-haves to reverse those rainy day fashion faux pas.
The chances of seeing a lady on the Virginia Tech campus wearing a pair of bright pink wellies (those mid-calf high rubber boots) are very good. Why? Because these shoes are not only comfortable, but keep your feet and pants dry on the rainiest days.
?The idea of people wearing rain boots is really interesting that they?re fashionable now. It?s easy to pull together and chic, even when it?s raining, because you can get cute patterned rain boots to go over skinny jeans and you can wear a nice trench,? said Jennifer Gage, a senior communication and fashion merchandising double-major.
While many are all about this returning fashion fad, others are not as amenable to rain boots.
?I?m one of those people who just rolls her jeans up and goes out. I hate it when my pants get wet, but those rubber boots are ridiculous. They just look silly,? said senior psychology major Jessica Gardner.
Trench coats and smaller rain jackets have also made a comeback on campus. The perfect alternative to that same old sweatshirt is a classically-fitting, vibrantly-colored trench. It can brighten the darkest days. Or, for a more subtle look, lined rain jackets provide the perfect combination of the warmth of a sweatshirt with a modern, tailored style.
According to Instyle.com, ?If ever there was an all-purpose, all-weather piece of clothing, it's the trenchcoat. Trenches never fail to work, to please, to look smart on the street and to travel better than any other kind of outerwear.?
In addition to a pair of fun, flirty rain boots and the time-honored trench, what better way to prevent class notes and homework from becoming soaked than a rubber bag. While these may not be as fashionable as Vera Bradley or Coach, let?s be honest ? sometimes practicality must take precedence. Plus, who really wants to defile their most precious accessory in a puddle at the bus stop?
If a full rainy day outfit isn?t for you, an ideally sized umbrella will do. It?s questionable why people carry umbrellas on a rainy day. Everything below the waist still gets wet and when it?s windy, water winds up encircling the entire body. However, umbrellas are the number one must-have when weather strikes.
Although, those gigantic, monster-sized golf umbrellas seem to have become dangerous around campus.
?I?ve been hit in the head so many times with those big umbrellas. And then if you have one and another person does too, you get into a collision,? said junior history major Terryn Wingler-Petty.
The ideal umbrella is one that is small enough to handle when the wind picks up and doesn?t swing back and hit you in the face. Also, it must be large enough to actually keep the majority of your body dry. What?s the point of even using one if you?re soaked or end up with a big, red bruise on your face?
When there?s a 50 percent chance of rain, without the essential wet-weather accessories, you are 100 percent likely to get soaked. So, the next time you check the Weather Channel before heading out, make sure to grab those rubber boots and get ready to feel like a kid again.
