The wise Nelly Furtado once said, ?Chivalry is dead, but you?re still kinda cute.? Okay, even I?ll admit ?Promiscuous? is an extremely catchy song, and I?m just as guilty of overplaying it this summer as anyone else. But when I actually meditate on those lyrics, I begin to wonder why no one is doing anything about this loss of chivalry. Where did it go, and when did promiscuity become the new chivalry? And what happens when a guy isn?t ?kinda cute? to make up for his lack of good manners?
For all of you boys out there, take this piece of advice and let it resound in your ears: girls like boys who have good manners. Not only is it about good manners, but girls want to be treated well. No, I?m not going to get all sappy and clich? and start talking about how all girls are supposed to be treated like princesses, but I will attempt to outline what courtesy we expect from the everyday male.
My decision to write about this topic was fueled by observing two boys while waiting for the bus last week. As if riding public transportation isn?t frustrating enough, let?s add a couple of inconsiderate boys to the equation.
As we waited for the bus, these boys were already plotting ways to ensure that they would get seats on the bus. Being the middle of the afternoon, it was a time when the bus would surely be packed, and the chance of getting a seat was doubtful at most. As the bus approached, these two boys started shoving, biting, name-calling and doing whatever they needed to do to get to the front of the line. Did they get seats? Of course they did, because they are scheming fools with only one thing on their minds ? getting a seat on the BT. I swear a nine-month pregnant woman could?ve walked onto that bus and they wouldn?t have moved an inch from their seats. Seeing these boys on their prized thrones made me sick ? not to mention the fact that I had to stand the whole bus ride.
Getting seats on the bus isn?t really what bothers me ? the foul language some boys have decided to share with us all on an everyday basis is another matter. If you ask me, a healthy word choice is the key to making a good first impression, especially when it comes to the ladies.
If this is the case, then I want to know why it is that so many boys appear to have a vocabulary that consists of a handful of four-letter words that we all know I?d get fired if I wrote them here. You all know what I?m talking about. I know I sound childish when I call them ?bad words,? but that?s what they are. They aren?t pleasant to listen to.
