MySpace, a popular website among teens and adults alike, has launched a voter-registration campaign to motivate its account holders to register to vote in national and local elections, specifically the national Senatorial elections this fall.
MySpace is using several strategies to encourage voter registration and participation, including running promotional advertisements and offering ?I registered to vote on MySpace? badges, which can be displayed on the profiles of participating individuals. Probably the most significant of the website?s plan is making it possible to actually register to vote through the website at http://www.myspace.com/declareyourself
Even though Election Day is November 7 and fast approaching, MySpace.com is to be commended for stepping forward and encouraging voter participation. Better late than never. The age group ranging from 18 to 24 is the lowest age group of voters in the United States. It is good that people are finally realizing how much the political process needs the participation of all age groups and are encouraging young adults to get involved.
According to yahoo.com, of the total MySpace population about 80 percent of its 114 million registered members are old enough to vote. It is good that voter registration is becoming more and more accessible online and that websites such as MySpace are encouraging people to vote.
Higher education, as well as other big issues, will play a major role in the Senate elections this fall. It would be nice to see MySpace also include information on each of the candidates to encourage those who do register to vote and to get to know their candidates.
Other websites popular with young adults should follow in the footsteps of MySpace to promote the political process. Jeff Berman, MySpace?s senior vice president for public affairs, said, he hopes ?thousands upon thousands of MySpacers will register to vote and spread the word.? Registering is one thing; voting is another. Take advantage of the political process. Get out there and vote.
