Move over facebook, www.Daylert.com is attempting to become the newest craze with college students. Developed by Virginia Tech senior Fahad Hassan, Daylert will allow users similar options to facebook.com, in addition to monthly calendars, meeting and party schedulers and the ability to send text message reminders. The site, in testing stages now, will launch Oct. 20.
According to The Roanoke Times, while Hassan acknowledges that a facebook takeover is near impossible, ?he hopes to make it easier for groups to plan events and gauge attendance beforehand.? His plan for this site is to act as an organizational tool in order to combine the many commitments of college students with a social network.
According to The Roanoke Times, Hassan believes that no matter how many times students utilize sites such as Facebook.com and www.MySpace.com, they are not necessary. His goal is for Daylert to ?become so integral to students? lives that they will absolutely depend on it.?
As convenient as Daylert does sound, let?s not fool ourselves. If www.facebook.com one day disappeared, we would all be ok. Life would go on. While it seems that Daylert will provide a lot of cool features and will likely become popular among college students, we do not need it to survive. If anything, it seems that people these days are getting frustrated with social networking sites and the trend is coming to an end. It?s almost disgusting how much we rely on the latest technology to make plans these days. Whatever happened to face-to-face interaction?
Nonetheless, Daylert is an appealing invention, but definitely one that we can live without.
