Rivermill: Home of 60 beers and $6 entrees

November 15, 2006 | by Kate McMahon, CT Features Reporter
Last weekend, I was sitting at Rivermill with a few friends over drinks. It was just another crowded Friday night at a local bar. Looking around the room, I noticed a group of patrons with plates in front of them. Most of the time bars are known only for their drink specials and specialty shots, but what about the food?

I was curious, so the next day, I paid Rivermill another visit. The bar reminds me of a modern Irish pub, with brick and wooden walls highlighted by about a dozen televisions playing almost every sport imaginable. Who knew kickboxing was televised? The music keeps the collegiate atmosphere in tact as I heard Zeppelin and Nirvana resonating in my booth.

Every time I walk into Rivermill, I wonder exactly what I'm supposed to do. Sit down, get a menu, or wait? Your best bet is to go directly to the bar where you'll find menus, then get a table. Don't be afraid to walk back up to the bar to order. If you don't, you'll never get food.

All of the food is reasonably priced around $6, and everything is pretty quick to make. The menu consists of every burger imaginable, sandwiches, salads and bar-like appetizers including cheese fries, onion rings and bean dip. I tried the broccoli-cheese bites. With tiny shreds of broccoli and creamy cheese tucked inside a crunchy exterior, these little bites explode with flavor. When I ordered them, I thought I was making the healthy appetizer choice. But these were too good to be good for me.

As I was throwing the last bite into my mouth, I looked over at some guys playing darts. Instead of sitting around while I waited for my burger, I decided to play, too. With music, television, dart boards and pool tables, Rivermill can keep even the hungriest person occupied while he or she waits for a meal.

As my name was called for my burger, I quickly ran over and received the appropriately named Rivermelt. This wasn't any ordinary burger. It was topped with sautéed mushrooms, onions, jalapenos, provolone (my choice) and mayonnaise. Plus, instead of being served on hamburger buns, it came on my choice of wheat bread.

I must say I was expecting more. While the burger was juicy on the inside with a crunchy outside (just the way I like it), I tasted flavors of burnt charcoal. Not exactly my idea of a good burger. Also, when I get a cheeseburger, I like lots of cheese. I could hardly see or taste the provolone.

Add to your meal with a drink from their selection of 25 beers on tap and 60 bottles of imported and domestics.
