Hot Movie Rentals for Cold Winter Nights

January 15, 2007 | by Kate McMahon, CT Features Reporter

Sitting in a dorm room with nothing to do can make the sanest person go crazy. To combat the boredom of winter seclusion or to liven up a get together with friends, movie rentals are a principal component. But which movies are making the A-list this season?

According to Blockbuster sales associates, horror and comedy films are making a significant impression on renters this season. Here are the top-five movie recommendations to overcome those dull, monotonous weekends.

Crank: This action packed thriller is full of eye candy, starring Jason Statham and Amy Smart. Statham is Chev Chelios, a hitman who must save his girlfriend (Smart) from his former employers. But there's a catch; he was injected with a deadly poison that will kill him if his heart rate drops.

Bandidas: Penelope Cruz and Selma Hayek are gun-slinging bank robbers in this comedic Western flick. Bandidas is a must-see for guys hoping to see a tight wardrobe on svelte figures.

Snakes on a Plane: Meant to be a horror movie, Snakes on a Plane is full of quirky one-liners and insane attack scenes. Samuel L. Jackson plays an FBI agent who is forced to go crazy on poisonous snakes that were released onboard. Be warned: this movie should not be taken seriously.

The Illusionist: Edward Norton and Jessica Biel star in this ill-fated love story between a magician and his aristocratic sweetie. Expect a plot twist to keep the ending a surprise.

Little Miss Sunshine: Surrounding a road trip to a beauty pageant, this film highlights familial dysfunction at its finest. Starring Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell, viewers can expect a good laugh.

Rental runner-ups include:

Comedy: Beerfest, Talladega Nights

Horror: The Covenant

Drama: Annapolis
