The No. 1 national holiday for many Americans is upon us again. It is the day to pay tribute to the football gods and stuff our faces with store-bought meat products and massive amounts of beer.

Super Bowl Sunday is the perfect excuse to throw a party the night before another long Monday in class. Here are a few shopping tips and recipes to guide party throwers through Superbowl XLI.

Grocery shopping for a party can be overwhelming if you forget to make a shopping list before making the trip to the grocery store. Must-have party items include: nachos, salsa and cheese dip. Mini hotdogs and shrimp rings are also easy alternatives to a home-made meal. For thirsty guests, hosts can invest in a keg for a larger party or score a mini-keg for a smaller gathering. Mini-kegs are available in Coors Light and Heineken.

For those who want to put a little extra effort into making something delicious to enjoy during the game, these recipes should quench a hungry or thirsty appetite.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip

1 cup thawed, chopped frozen spinach
11/2 cups thawed, chopped frozen artichoke hearts

1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup grated Parmesan
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Boil spinach and artichokes in one cup of water until tender and drain. Discard liquid. Heat cream cheese in microwave for one minute or until hot and soft. Stir in rest of ingredients and serve hot.

Spicy Chicken Wings

12 whole chicken wings
2 tablespoons garlic salt
2 tablespoons black pepper
2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons fresh Greek oregano leaves

Rinse the chicken wings under cold running water, then drain and blot dry completely with paper towels. Place the wings in a large bowl and sprinkle with the garlic salt, pepper, cayenne, and oregano. Season just one side of the wings for mild, or for hotter wings, turn the wings to coat the other side with seasonings and then cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 24 hours.

Preheat a grill to medium-high. Grill chicken wings, turning once, until the juices run clear when pierced with a fork.

Margaritas

5 oz tequila
3 oz triple sec
2 (6 oz) cans frozen limeade concentrate
4 cups ice cubes
coarse salt
4 slices of lime

Makes: 4 servings

Salt the rims of four small margarita glasses. To do this, just pour salt onto a small plate, moisten the rims of the glasses with a damp towel and then press them into the salt.  Combine tequila, triple sec and limeade concentrate in a blender. Fill blender with ice cubes. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses, garnish with a slice of lime and serve.
