Despite a 21-1 loss in the series finale, the Hokies stole the series against the No. 18 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets winning two of the three matchups during a weekend home stand in Blacksburg. Junior pitcher Angela Tincher was once again spectacular, going 2-0 and striking out 30 batters in 14 innings while allowing just six base hits.

Caroline Strolle and Charisse Mariconda both hit home runs and tallied three RBI's a piece in the series-opening 6-0 win. The Hokies capitalized on errors in the second game, using a fifth run error to distance themselves and take the game 3-1. Despite the early success, Tech was blasted for a record of 21 runs in the series closer thanks in large part to six Yellow Jacket home runs.

The wins put the Hokies at 24-9 on the season and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tech next plays on Saturday.

Track and Field

Eleven members of Virginia Tech's track and field team opened the outdoor season at Miami this weekend, breaking one school record and meeting two NCAA Regional qualifying times.

Freshman Kristi Castlin broke Tech's 100-meter hurdles record with a time of 13.53 seconds en route to a second place finish and an NCAA Regional qualification. The record is Castlin's third career record; she also holds the 55- and 60-meter indoor hurdles marks.

Junior Sherlenia Green also qualified for the NCAA Regional in the 400-meter hurdles. She ran the event in 58.65 seconds for second place, two spots ahead of fellow Hokie, freshman Queen Harrison.

The Hokies will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to participate in the Wake Forest Open

Baseball

The Tech baseball team took one of three in a series against North Carolina State over the weekend. Friday's game was postponed until Saturday, where the Hokies dropped the doubleheader, 12-8 and 5-2.

In the final game, the Hokies built a 4-1 lead before squandering three runs to the Wolfpack in the ninth inning. Thanks to hits from Adam Redd, Warren Schaeffer and Matt Hacker, the Hokies scored two runs in the 11th inning sealing the victory.

The Hokies (13-8, 3-3 ACC) are third in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal division and will play 12 of their next 13 games at home. Longwood University makes a stop in Blacksburg on Wednesday before the North Carolina Tar Heels come to town for a three-game series.

Lacrosse

A late rally by the Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team fell just short Sunday, as the Hokies lost 16-15 to the visiting Boston College Eagles.

Junior Jenna Reich led the Hokies in scoring with four goals and two assists, while senior Lindsay Pieper scored three of her own.

Down three goals with under five minutes to play, senior Britt Faulkner and freshman Faith Richards scored back-to-back goals to bring the Hokies within one, but the Eagles defense tightened up and held on for the win.

The Hokies return to action next Friday, March 23 for a conference game in Durham, N.C., against Duke.

Swimming and Diving

Junior swimmer Scott Beard finished 20th in the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships held in Minneapolis, Minn. Senior Gus Calado finished fourth in the same event, posting a season best time of 47.84. Calado also competed in the 200-yard butterfly, an event he placed fourth in last year, but was disqualified. The NCAA Championships conclude the Virginia Tech swimming and diving season.

Women's Tennis

The No.67 Virginia Tech women's tennis team defeated the No.74 University of Louisville Cardinals 5-2 Saturday in Blacksburg.

Inga Beermann, Karina Porushkevich, J.J. Larson, Abbey Walker and Jessica

Long all won their singles matches, with Ashley James being the only Hokie to lose. In doubles play, the only Virginia Tech team to win its match was Beermann/Larson.

The Lady Hokies return to the courts Saturday when they are scheduled to take on the No.18 Wake Forest University Demon Deacons at noon. The match will take place at the Burrows Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
