Tuition, a new masters program and a new basketball facility were some of the several topics discussed at yesterday's quarterly Virginia Tech Board of Visitors meeting.

The board unanimously approved a motion to increase tuition for the 2007-2008 school year. In this motion the tuition for Virginia residents will be $7,397, an increase of 6.1 percent from this year's $6,973, and $12,503 if they live on campus. Out of state residents will be paying $24,881, a 4.5 increase from this year's $19,409. For in-state graduate students, the tuition will go up 5.2 percent to $8,986 and up 9.2 percent to $15,351 for out-of-state graduate students.

The new tuition increase was suggested to go up no more than six percent by the 2007 General Assembly tuition moderation legislation.

Tech's tuition is still ranked one of the best value schools among its peer institutions in Virginia by the Princeton Review. However, it currently ranks 20 out of 23 for in-state costs of Virginia public schools.

The board also passed a motion to establish a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Technology Development and Management. The new masters program will be a joint-degree program with Georgetown University.

According to a report made by the board, the program will be "committed to creating a world-class graduate level program built on integrating science with technology, management, ethics and public policy."

The program's curriculum will require 30 semester hours in subjects such as physiology pharmacology and management of information technology. The proposal will be forwarded to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia for further review.

A third topic the board discussed was the approval of authorization for a new basketball facility. The motion was proposed to enhance Tech's men's and women's basketball team potential. To meet these goals the committee of Buildings and Grounds suggested that proper facilities are required.

The 59,000 square foot facility will include two practice courts, men's and women's locker rooms, a training room for both teams and space for Olympic weight training. It will be located next to Cassell Coliseum. The estimated costs for the facility will be $20 million and will be completed in 2010.

The next Board of Visitors quarterly meeting will be held from June 3-4.
