Baseball

The Virginia Tech baseball team hosted North Carolina in a three-game series this weekend at English Field and was able to earn a win over the No. 4 Tar Heels.

The Hokies won one game of the three-game series and picked up their fourth conference win of the season, already marking their conference win total from last season. Tech is currently 4-5 in the ACC, after finishing with a 4-25 mark in 2006.

The Tar Heels showed their offensive prowess in the first and third games of the series, and walked away with a win in both.

In the first game of the series, North Carolina belted four home runs and 19 hits on their way to a 15-4 win. The Tar Heels jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to two home runs and continued to cruise to victory over the Hokies.

The third game of the series was much of the same, as North Carolina's offense scored 13 runs on 17 hits with Tech failing to conjure up any offense of their own in a 13-1 defeat.

The middle game was a different story though, as the Hokies and senior starting pitcher Andrew Wells tamed the big Tar Heels' bats. Wells allowed only four hits and one unearned run over seven innings on his way to earning his second win of the season.

North Carolina had a chance to take control by loading the bases with no outs in the fourth inning, but Wells worked himself out of the jam by recording three consecutive outs and allowing no runs.

The Hokies rode three two-run innings and walked away with a 6-3 win to snap their eight game losing streak to the Tar Heels, which dated back to 1976.

The Hokies return to action Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. for an away game at James Madison.

Softball

Junior pitcher Angela Tincher dominated over the weekend, pitching a no-hitter Saturday and a one-hit shutout Sunday as the 24th - ranked Hokies softball team won two out of three games against Florida State.

The perfect game is Tincher's second of the season and her school-record 10th career no-hitter.

Tincher put on an extremely impressive weekend in Tallahassee; in two games, she pitched 15 innings of shutout ball, gave up only one hit, struck out 29 batters, and earned two wins.

The Hokies return to the diamond this weekend for a three-game home series against No. 25 North Carolina State.

Men's Basketball

Zabian Dowdell was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press.

The senior guard averaged 17.4 points, 2.1 steals and 3.1 assists on the season and was a first team All-ACC selection.

Dowdell finished his career sixth all time in points at Virginia Tech and started all but 4 of his 122 games as a Hokie.

Dowdell is the first Tech player to be named an honorable mention All-American since Bryant Matthews was named in 2004.

Golf

The Virginia Tech golf team shot a final-round 290 Sunday afternoon at the Furman Intercollegiate, which gave them a tournament winning three-round score of 873.

Tech's Jurrian van der Vaart shot a one-under 71 in Sunday's final round, which was good enough for him to finish seventh overall individually with a three-round score of 217. Senior Ryan Sypniewski tied for twelfth with a three-round score of 218.

The golf team returns to the links Friday when it competes at the Administaff/Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga.

Tennis

Both the men's and women's tennis teams fell this weekend against N.C. State. The men's team, ranked No. 35 in the country, fell 4-3 against the No. 21 Wolfpack.

Tech picked up singles wins from senior Arvid Puranen and junior Albert Larregola, and won the doubles matchup of Larregola and senior Alexei Sergeev. The loss puts Tech at 10-5 on the season and 1-3 in the ACC.

In women's tennis, the Hokies were swept at home by the Wolfpack 7-0. The loss drops the Hokies to 9-8 on the season and 0-5 in the ACC.
