The Virginia Tech Lacrosse team has had its ups and downs this season.
"The girls worked really hard this year," head coach Katrina Silva said. "We didn't have a great season by the numbers, not many wins, but we definitely worked as hard as UVa did, and that's important."
The team finished up their season with a 5-12 record, but that didn't mean much to Silva.
"This team took ownership of itself," she said. "They made no excuses and didn't point any fingers. They worked hard and deserved a better year. The seniors should be proud of the legacy of hard work they are leaving behind, that they instilled in the underclassmen."
Silva's main goal for the future is to add depth to her roster, something already in the works.
"We had a great spread of goals scored," Silva noted. "Ten girls or so scored 20 goals, which is great. But it could be better."
"We need more consistency in scoring during the games. I want it so that any kid can score on any given day. Where we just pass the ball to whoever is hot, and it shouldn't matter who it is," Silva said.
The beginning of the season started rough but got better soon after. In early March they went on a three game winning streak, even crushing one opponent by 11 points. But when they faced Boston College in the middle of the schedule, Silva described, the entire outcome of the rest of the season was decided.
"You know that was a tough one," Silva described. "That was the middle of the season, and it could have gone either way. We could have beat them and gotten the ball rolling on a strong finish, and gained great momentum. Unfortunately we didn't."
The team, though, had made great progress despite the W's to prove it.
"This team has totally changed since the beginning of the season," Silva said. "Had we played BC like we played Maryland, we would have rocked them."
The future, Silva related, looks promising for the lacrosse team.
"We are getting there," she said, "It always takes time to get into a new system. But in three years time I see us as a top three team. Once you beat one of the top ranked teams, on any day you could beat all of them. And we'll get there."
And next year begins now.
