A North Carolina native, Bell cites his reason for leaving as a desire to see more playing time. NCAA regulations dictate that a move to another Division I school would mean that Bell would have to sit out the 2007 season, but playing Division II will allow Bell to see playing time immediately.
A high school All-American, Bell has seen very little action for the Hokies due to chronic knee injuries. In 2006 he rushed for 107 yards on 35 carries, finding the end zone twice. Bell’s departure opens the door for Kenny Lewis Jr. to become the primary backup for All-ACC tailback Brandon Ore. Last season Lewis played in seven games and started one, tallying up 215 yards on 54 carries and two touchdowns.
