The Virginia Tech Women’s Track team excelled at both the 2007 AT&T U.S.A Outdoor Championships and the 2007 FinishLine U.S.A Junior Championships over the weekend.  Junior Sherlenia Green finished 8th nationally in the 400-meter hurdles, while freshmen Kristi Castlin and Queen Harrison finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the U.S.A Junior 100-meter hurdles. Harrison also recorded a first place finish in the Junior 400-meter hurdles. The two freshman women, Castlin and Harrison, qualified for the Pan American Junior Championships in San Paulo, Brazil.

Harrison finished her 400-meter hurdles junior victory with a time of 56.86 and a 100-meter hurdles second place time of 13.12. Castlin recorded a 13.07 in her 100-meter hurdles junior win. Finally, Green finished with an 8th place time of 57.47 in a 400-meter hurdles race that consisted of several professional hurdlers.

All three Hokie women are continuing a stellar track season in which ACC Indoor and ACC Outdoor Track Championships were won. Additionally, the women won the NCAA East Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fl. The trio also contributed to a 21st place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Castlin broke a 28-year-old American Junior, under 19 years-old, record earlier in the year with a 100-meter hurdles time of 12.91.

Assistant Coach Lawrence Johnson was named the top women’s sprints and hurdles coach in the country by the United States Track & Field Association, while Head Coach Dave Cianelli was named the NCAA East Region Women’s Coach of the year.

Castlin and Harrison will compete at the Pan American Junior Championships in Brazil July 6-8 with hopes of qualifying for the Junior World Championships.
