An associate professor of Computer Engineering has been invited to attend a prestigious symposium at the end of the year.
Dr. Sandeep Shukla, working for Virginia Tech in the department of electrical and computer engineering, was invited to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) annual Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium. The academy "selects about 100 people from around the ages of 30 to 45," that are "leaders in their fields," to attend the symposium to be held in November in Irvine, California, said Shukla.
Shukla added that he plans on attending the symposium, where he will become a NAS alumnus.
Currently, Shukla's work is with embedded computers. These small computers are in commonplace items, such as cars, DVDs, washing machines, and cell phones.
"They are very complicated to configure," Shukla said.
He is also working with nano-scale computer chip models.
He says he is working with models because not only are the chips difficult to manufacture, but they come with defects.
Although there are defects in these chips, they are not completely useless. Shukla and colleagues are working to figure out different mathematical models that allow the chips to do certain tasks, and make them useable.
In addition to his work with computers and electronics, Shukla says he is "publishing all of the time." He is working on three books now, and is continuously sending papers to different conferences.
His experience in publications is extensive, and he has previously worked on over 45 publications, including textbooks, journal publications, and conference papers.
Shukla received his undergraduate degree from Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India, before receiving his Masters degree and Ph.D. from the State University of New York Albany.
Shukla is currently the director of the Formal Engineering Research with Modeling, Abstractions, and Transformation at Virginia Tech.
He has received many awards for his work, including one from the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers in 2004.
