The popular Hokies United T-shirts have made their way back into stores for a limited time in light of students returning to campus.
Since the April 16 shootings, about 130,000 T-shirts were sold across the nation to support the Hokie Memorial Fund, which received all proceeds. Since the fund closed, so did sales of the T-shirt; however, shirts are being sold again for a new purpose.
"There's a new cause they are being sold for," said Adeel Khan, Student Government Association president and member of Hokies United. "The (Concert for Virginia Tech) is costing the university a lot of money, even though the artists are playing for free. The money from these shirts will support the university's cost for the event," Khan said.
There was a period of about a month where the shirts were not sold, but Khan believes the re-release of the shirts is at a good time.
"It was something we thought was appropriate for the students coming back to school in the light of April 16," he said.
The shirts went back on sale on August 19 at the university bookstore and Volume II bookstore. They will remain on the shelves until September 9, soon after the benefit concert, and will also be available for purchase online at the bookstore website. The price of the shirts has been raised to $10, up from the original price of $5 last spring.
"We are selling them in a period of time where a lot of things related to April 16 will be going on," Khan said. "People still want these T-shirts."
Thirty-thousand shirts have been ordered so far, but more will be ordered if necessary, Khan said.
Currently, there are no plans to release the shirts again after September 9.
