Drillfield
The Drillfield is a large, open space of grass in the center of Virginia Tech’s campus. It is the dividing point between the “academic” and “residential” sides of campus. The Drillfield is a common meeting place, as many recreational teams use it for practice space. It is also a place for special groups to host events.
The Drillfield is also the site of Relay for Life, an annual 24-hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. In 2009, Tech hosted the largest collegiate relay in the nation.
A memorial to the shootings that took place on April 16, 2007 is located on the Drillfield facing Burruss Hall. Memorial services were held on the Drillfield on following anniversaries.
Originally used as an exercise space for the corps of cadets, the Drillfield remains the site of physical exercise for the corps as well as practices for the Highty-Tighties, the regimental band.
