Drillfield
The Drillfield is a large, open space of grass in the center of Virginia Tech’s campus. It is the dividing point between the “academic” and “residential” sides of campus. The Drillfield is a common meeting place, as many recreational teams use it for practice space. It is also a place for special groups to host events.
The Drillfield is also the site of Relay for Life, an annual 24-hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. In 2009, Tech hosted the largest collegiate relay in the nation.
A memorial to the shootings that took place on April 16, 2007 is located on the Drillfield facing Burruss Hall. Memorial services were held on the Drillfield on following anniversaries.
Originally used as an exercise space for the corps of cadets, the Drillfield remains the site of physical exercise for the corps as well as practices for the Highty-Tighties, the regimental band.

March 4, 2009
Have you seen this proposal to pave the Drillfield and turn it into a parking garage? This is simply a terrible idea. For starters, this would create a parking problem instead of alleviating one.
Letter: Utilize Drillfield for parking
March 2, 2009
As the student body grows year after year, parking becomes harder to come by on campus. It's not uncommon to drive around the commuter lots for hours trying to find an open space.

At first it may seem that Chris Armstrong has magical powers. While standing in the middle of the Drillfield, he raises a white and maroon umbrella 12 minutes after noon and suddenly around 50 people freeze in place all over the Drillfield.
