With no notes in the thick of the battle, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain went toe-to-toe in Nashville last night with a largely emasculated Tom Brokaw holding sway -- the campaigns agreed that there would be no follow-up questions, though Brokaw did throw in a few over the course of the evening.

With the start of a new athletic season upon us, the University of Virginia is banning signs of any kinds at all sporting events, including football and basketball. Virginia's athletic department instituted this policy in order to promote a "positive game-day environment."

One of the largest classes in Virginia Tech history entertained an opening act on Monday evening. A score of voter registration foot soldiers descended on John Boyer's 2,600-student World Regions course, urging students to register to vote (which is a good thing) and decrying the use of absentee balloting in the upcoming election (which is absolutely stupid.)

The reputable online publication, "Cracked.com," recently published a piece on a collection of ridiculous, as they deemed them, classes taught in colleges. While the research methods employed by the site were in keeping with what you would expect from "America's Only Humor and Video Site, since 1958," — consisting basically of looking at course titles — the issue of what counts as credible university material is serious. And how we determine what should be treated as worthwhile knowledge, and who determines it, is even more so.
