Frank Beamer
Frank Beamer (Oct. 18, 1946 - ) is the head coach of the Virginia Tech football team, a position he has held since 1987.
He played cornerback at Virginia Tech from 1966-1969. He graduated in 1969 and attended Radford University for graduate school.
In 1972, Beamer became a graduate assistant for the University of Maryland, then became an assistant coach at The Citadel, where he coached for seven seasons. In 1979 he became the defensive coordinator at Murray State University and was promoted to head coach in 1981, compiling a record of 42–23–2 over six seasons. Beamer was named head coach at Virginia Tech on Dec. 22, 1986.
During Beamer's tenure as head coach, Virginia Tech moved from independent status to become a member of the Big East Conference in 1991 and a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004. In his first year in the ACC, Beamer was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year.
Beamer and his wife, Cheryl, have two children.
