After holding their own with some of the nation's highest ranked teams, the Virginia Tech golf team finished in fifth place with a three-round total of 875 at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga., this past weekend.
Bailey's roots in region run deep

Marshall Bailey's father introduced him to the storied sport of golf at the young age of seven. By following his dad around on the course as a kid, Bailey got a knack for the game early on and the rest, as they say, is history.
Golf finishes sixth in VCU Shootout

After finishing day one of the VCU Shootout in second place, the Hokies lost their momentum and fell to sixth at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot. Fifteen teams from different conferences across the nation came to compete.

Hokie golf heads north this weekend as the University of Michigan hosts The Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich., to knock 2008 off the tee. Tech's paired against Michigan and the University of California on Saturday -- the opening day of play. The California golf program is one the Hokies and coach Jay Hardwick are all too familiar with. The Bears were the winners of the 2004 National Championship, which was hosted by Tech.
Weaver exits Amateurs early

Drew Weaver said he had a lot to live up to after winning the 2007 British Amateur last summer. Along with that feat comes a four-year exemption into the U.S. Amateur, which began last Monday in Pinehurst, N.C., about an hour away from his hometown of High Point, N.C. Unfortunately for Weaver, he was eliminated on Wednesday in a playoff that could have qualified him for the final 64-player field.

All-American, Virginia Player of the Year, second all time lowest Virginia Tech scoring average, and 6 out of 7 top 10 finishes to close the season. Those were just a few of the marks set by senior Jurrian van der Vaart this past season, leaving big shoes to fill for this year's crop of Hokie golfers.
Weaver golfs in AT&T National

Another year of Tiger Woods hosting the AT&T National, another year without his presence in the field. Sidelined for the rest of the season following knee surgery, all Woods could do was send a telephone congratulations to tournament champion Anthony Kim. Without Tiger, 120 other golfers did tee it up on the 7,255-yard layout held at the Congressional Country club in Bethesda, Md., and one of them was Virginia Tech's Drew Weaver.
Van der Vaart, Weaver attend British Amateur

Fifty-two weeks ago this Saturday, Drew Weaver finished up a 2&1 victory over Australian Tim Stewart in the final match to win the 2007 British Amateur.
Van der Vaart plays in championship

Less than 36 hours after tapping in for par on the final hole of last weekend's NCAA Men's Golf Championships, Jurrian van der Vaart had already boarded a plane back to his home country, the Netherlands. Van der Vaart's closing round of even par, 72, vaulted him into a ninth place finish for the tournament, and matched the second lowest score that day.
