Pete Hughes
Pete Hughes took over the Virginia Tech baseball program following the 2006 season and the retirement of Hall of Fame coach Chuck Hartman, who spent 28 years with the Hokies and 47 years as a head coach.
As the Hokies’ head coach, Hughes has amassed a 78-84 record, including a 32-21 mark in 2009, which was the highest winning percentage in a single season for a Tech team since 1999.
Hughes began his coaching career at Hamilton College in New York in 1990 where he served as an assistant for the football team and as a top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the baseball team. He continued his dual-sport coaching roles at Northeastern University from fall 1991 to 1996.
In 1997, he went to Texas to serve as the head coach of the baseball team at Trinity University. From 1997 to 1998, he led the Tigers to a 52-30 overall record.
In 1998, however, Hughes took over for a Boston College team that ended up going 17-23-1. The following year, Hughes led the Eagles to a 26-21-1 record. In 2000, the Eagles posted a 35-20 record, making just their second-ever appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament. That season, Hughes was named BIG EAST, New England and ABCA/Diamond Division I Northeast Region coach of the year.
He would go on to coach the Eagles through 2006 until landing the head coaching position at Tech.
In the summer of 2009, Hughes signed a contract extension with the Hokies, locking himself up as the baseball head coach through 2014.
