This Election Day, Nov. 4, 2008, will be for me, and a majority of students here, an inaugural celebration of the right to vote, a defining moment in our collective move from adolescence into adulthood. Leaving political discussion to more appropriate forums, I would instead use the election as another anecdote in discussing my time in Blacksburg.

This may sound like a belated Halloween warning but, when you vote today, be careful what you wear. When you vote in Virginia, it is illegal to wear any item of clothing that can be construed as a partisan endorsement of a particular candidate. Buttons, hats and T-shirts that support Obama, McCain, Democrats or Republicans (or anyone else for that matter) should not be worn to the polls. Scary, no?

Getting our generation to vote is a major problem today and it is becoming a larger problem with each generation that nears the voting age, with less and less of that generation getting out there and not only registering to vote, but voting on Election Day -- the day that makes it count, where one voice is heard among many.
